Analyzing An Advertisement: Snickers

In this advertisement, we can see a group of friends that are driving to a sports practice. On the way, one of the passengers is a girl, in particular a popular actress or 'diva'. She is dressed to look very glamorous. Throughout the journey, she is constantly cranky and complaining towards the other guys, until one of them decides to give her a Snickers bar because 'when he's hungry, he becomes a heroine (actress)'. After eating, the girl changes back to being a guy, who is the original self. This is meant to show how Snickers can fulfill you whenever you are hungry. The thought originates from the belief that we all tend to get moody and cranky whenever we are hungry.
However, in order to portray that, the advertisers decided to rely on the stereotype that women are the ones that are usually cranky, and retain a moody attitude throughout. It tries to represent the image of a 'drama queen', and although the advertisement specifies that you become a 'heroine', meaning that you become more dramatic and sassy like a popular celebrity, it still falls under the stereotyping of women. This is stereotypical to women as only women are seen to be portrayed as dramatic, moody and cranky, and this kind of portrayal establishes a negative social-image into society. Categorizing them into being dramatic and overreacting creates a negative view or bias towards them by others, and can lead to them being discriminated upon verbally.
This is also a pattern you see across other advertisements of theirs and does not meet with much surprise from the audience, showing that this belief is ingrained in our society.
The target audience here is big, but more specifically young males who tend to be busy with things and may not always have the time to have a proper meal. Instead, they could grab a quick snack like a Snickers bar to quench their hunger and continue doing their corresponding task, which here would be to head over to a cricket game.
